The Benefits of Drinking Lemon Water!


I have been drinking warm lemon water every morning for the past few years and the reason behind this daily habit are worth sharing. This inexpensive, simple, natural concoction has many health benefits for you.

1. Drinking it first thing in the morning helps to rehydrate all the tissues while flushing out the toxins from the night before.
2. It has incredible immune boosting abilities. Lemons are packed with vitamin C which helps the immune system to operate at its peak to aid off colds and flu.
3. It aids in digestion. Lemons contain pectin, a dietary fiber, which supports a healthy digestion. This leaves you with a greater feeling of fullness.
4. Reduces gastro-intestinal issues such as bloating, constipation and indigestion – the acidity in lemons encourages the body to slow down digestion allowing for more nutrient absorption which in turn relieves many gut issues!
5. Promotes healthy hydration. Water is essential for our health. Our body is made up of 60% of water so it very important to get 6-8 glasses of water daily for proper organ function. Adding lemon or other ingredients such as herbs, fruits and vegetables will help with the taste of your water. No added sugar needed.
6. Aids in weight loss. Drinking warm water will increase your body temperature. This will boost your metabolic rate which in turn allows your body to burn more calories.
7. Apple Cider Vinegar (ACV) has many of the same health benefits as lemons so together they form a dynamic health boosting duo. ACV also contains pectin that helps to sooth intestinal spasms and prevents indigestion. The acidic acid in ACV helps to suppress your appetite, increase metabolism and reduce water retention.
8. Cayenne Pepper: Another ingredient that can be nicely paired with lemon to make a natural cleansing and detoxifying concoction. It is a rich source of potassium, calcium and vitamins. It has a significant list of health benefits but to name a few it helps to stimulate the circulatory system, relieve intestinal gas, aid in digestion and increases metabolic rate to burn excess fat.

Listed below are some of the recipes I use on a daily basis. I switch between warm lemon water with cayenne pepper, warm lemon water with ACV or just plain warm lemon water depending on how I’m feeling. However it took me awhile to get use to drinking ACV because I used to hate vinegar but after researching the health benefits I have learnt to love it over time. I always have my warm drink first thing in the morning before breakfast to reap the full benefits and then I take a blend of lemon water with other ingredients to sip on throughout the day!

TIP: Invest in a Lemon squeezer. The amount of juice you expel using the aid compared to just hand squeezing is millimeters of a difference!

Traditional Warm Lemon Water
• ½ Lemon squeezed
• 1 cup warm water

Spicy Lemon Detox
• ½ Lemon squeezed
• 1 cup warm water
• Dash of cayenne pepper (more if you can handle it, start small and then add more to your liking)
• Honey to taste

Total Body Detox
• ½ Lemon squeezed
• 1 cup warm water
• 1 tsp of ACV
• Honey to taste

Delicious Water Mixes
• Lemon wedges
• Lemon peels
• Lemon squeezed
• Cucumber
• Herbs – Mint, rosemary, sage
• Mixed berries – blueberries, strawberries, blackberries, raspberries, watermelon, and pineapple.
